After The Avalanche - Avalanche First Aid

Mountain Medical Academy’s Avalanche First Aid course is a 12 hour course designed to answer the question “You successfully completed a companion rescue, now what?” An AAIRE Avalanche Rescue Course, AAIRE Level I course or similar avalanche rescue courses is recommended as a prerequisite. This class is for all backcountry users that travel in avalanche terrain. This includes backcountry skiiers, snowboarders, snowmobilers, snowshoers, and rescue professionals.

Course Info

Our Avalanche First Aid Course Includes

  • 12 hours of instruction

  • Activating Search and Rescue

  • Avalanche Airway Assessment

  • Avalanche Trauma Assessment

  • Avalanche CPR Techniques

  • Victim Stabilization: Hemorrhage Control and Hypothermia Prevention

  • American Heart Association CPR, First Aid, and AED Certification

Friday

  • 4 hour classroom day meeting at 5:00PM

  • This 4 hour block will be in a classroom and will teach the fundamentals of Avalanche First Aid in a hands on and lecture format:

    • Airway Assessment

    • Trauma Assessment

    • AHA Heartsaver CPR, First Aid, AED

    • Avalanche Victim Algorithm

  • First Aid and Survival Equipment

Saturday

  • 8 Hour class outside

  • Taking everything we learned in the classroom and bringing it outside with real life scenarios that will challenge students to think about how to treat an avalanche victim.

Prerequisites

  • Working knowledge of avalanche rescue equipment (Avalanche Transceiver, Shovel Probe Pole)

  • A high level of stoke.

What to Expect

We teach didactically and experientially. We have a half day in the classroom setting. This is followed with hands-on learning to reinforce your knowledge and practice hard skills. Skill stations and scenarios are taught using real medical and outdoor equipment. All of our instructors have a background in medicine and work in the medical field. We have experience using medical skills in actual emergencies. We challenge students to use the skills taught to rescue and resuscitate an avalanche victim.

Registration Information

Each class needs a minimum of 5 people with a maximum of 15. Classes will be held outside. We will be outside conditions, so come prepared with the appropriate clothing for the cold weather and bring food, water and warm drink. Click here to view our refund, deposit, and cancellation policies.

Note

This class does not replace a formal avalanche awareness and rescue course (such as an AIARE Rescue or AIARE Level I) course. This class provides information on first aid and avalanche victim resuscitation.
